Scientists glue two proteins together, driving cancer cells to self-destruct.
Stanford University researchers hope new techniques will flip lymphoma protein’s normal action – from preventing cell death to triggering it. So what does that mean? The scientists aim to use the natural method of cell death to trick cancer cells into disposing of themselves. The scientists do this by artificially bringing together two proteins that switches on a set of cell death genes, ultimately driving tumor cells to kill themselves.
The scientists point out that they are currently testing their theory in the lab and hope to gather enough pre-clinical data to support launching clinical trials of the compounds. Furthermore, they plan to build similar components that could target other cancer-driving proteins which are drivers of several different kinds of cancer.
